Extract from Diocese of Guildford “Grapevine”: “The petition on the Downing Street website asking for cash to be removed from transactions for scrap metal is an easy way to help in the battle against metal theft from churches. Please consider signing, if you have not already done so, and encourage others to sign up too. The theft of metal from churches from January to August 2011 had already exceeded the level of theft in the whole of the previous year, with as many as ten churches a day being targeted. The petition is online at here. For further advice and guidance over metal theft please visit ChurchCare.

Here is a photo collage of Christmas events in Egham this year. They include an Open Air Nativity in the town Centre drawing a crowd of people, and the High Street Christmas Kitchen dispensing food and hospitality - both supported by other local churches alongside St John’s; and some more unusual annual events at St John's: the highly competitive men's Christmas cake competition, the popular “Strictly Teddy” concert, and something more traditional: a robed Christmas choir.

The 2012 Olympics is coming up fast and it’s coming to us! With Olympic events taking place right on our doorstep (including the Cycling, which goes through Weybridge, and the Rowing events at Eton), with thousands of athletes staying at Royal Holloway, University of London and with the Olympic Torch passing through Egham we really are right on the edge of the action here in Runnymede Deanery. Thorpe Village came alive in December with a range of church led community events and services. The Christmas Fayre in Thorpe Village Hall on Saturday 11th saw hundreds of people celebrating the festive season as Father Christmas led everyone to church in a festive procession to see the new tower lights switched-on. Over 200 sung carols by candlelight on Sunday 18th, led by a 16 strong choir, and Christmas Eve saw the church packed to the rafters with people of all ages and over 90 children for the interactive ‘Living Crib Service’ with real animals! Midnight Mass struck a more traditional note with bible readings, carols, sermon and Holy Communion and of course a hint of incense as a large congregation celebrated the birth of our Lord once more. The tower lights will be switched-on again at various points during 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics. – Revd Damian Miles

There has been much activity in the local bell ringing community around Christmas and New Year. The St Peter’s Handbell Choir played in concerts, entertained the residents at Abbey Court and took part in a charity evening at the Thyme in the Tavern pub, where some of the guests had fun trying their hands on the bells: in the photo the pub owner and Revd Steve Brunn, St Peter’s ex-Curate, are giving it a go. At the eve of the year, church bells rang in 2012 in time-honoured tradition – photo: Vicar Tim joining the ringers for the New Year’s toast.
