Putting Church Back into Magna Carta Celebrations

A quick first photo review of the Deanery Magna Carta Celebration Service on Sunday, 14 June, which was a stunning event at St John’s Church Egham, attended by the Mayor and Mayoress and many dignitaries and representatives from community groups and causes. Worship was impressively led by the extended Deanery Choir and three trumpet fanfares from the Egham Brass Band; baronial shields were processed down the aisle and facsimile copies of the Magna Carta and its translation paraded to their display on the platform. Bishop Andrew delivered a brilliant talk on the importance of the Church in the making of the Great Charter, and equally in today’s society and communities, and pointing out that all the noble ideas of Magna Carta were really no novelty at all but written down long before in Deuteronomy! At the end of the service, a procession of local clergy followed representatives holding up new shields designed for the community groups of Runnymede. More photos and details to follow next month.
