St Mary’s Church Prominent in Thorpe Magna Carta Fair

Saturday, 16 May, saw a huge community effort in the little village of Thorpe with many community groups joining together to stage the first local Magna Carta Celebration. With the village partly closed to traffic and a large contingent of Surrey Police mainly evident in showing off their Police Smart Car and letting kids climb into the holding cell of a police van, nearly 2000 people visited the street fair, exhibitions, games, food stalls and entertainments. St Mary’s Church played a prominent roll by hosting exhibitions and hand bell concerts as well as one of the food stations and children’s games in the churchyard. Many locals took the opportunity to see the inside of their beautiful medieval church for the first time and some returned the following day for the Magna Carta themed service.
